God's Timing

I was sitting at a stoplight today.  Don't ask me how but somehow I absentmindedly put my car in park---when the light turned green I hit the gas and of course went nowhere.  Looking down I realized the car was in park.  I quickly corrected this and went on.  (Let's skip the part about how I put the car in park without realizing--it's quirky and dangerous--I get it.)

But even stranger is what I was doing while this happened.  I was complaining to God.  I had begun by praying for a friend of mine, wishing her patience for God's timing in her life.  Then I went on a rant about how I wasn't married yet.  How I was ready and I didn't understand why God was making me wait--can't he see how badly I want this in my life?  How I need my life to move in that direction.

That's when I hit the gas pedal and didn't go anywhere.  I've never absentmindedly put my car in park like that before. Never.  It's not coincidence that it happened when I was questioning God's timing.  He was telling me to wait.  Forcing me to wait.

It's impossible to see things from God's perspective.  The past three weeks have left my family with a lot to think about regarding God's will in our lives.  And why he lets things happen so slowly...or with my uncle's passing--way too soon and quick.

As frustrating as it is for me to wait patiently for my husband I need to remember that God's timing is perfect.  Maybe if my car hadn't been in park I would have been in an accident--waiting those few seconds spared me some sort of pain and gave me safe passage.  These years of waiting for the one God has chosen for me is preparing the way for a beautiful ride.

On a related note---I heard this song the radio and it touched my heart and made me think of my aunt and uncle.

Tragedy and Revelations

A little over a month ago my uncle was put in the hospital for what seemed to be something to not cause too much worry.  Four weeks later I was speaking to a huge, packed out church standing over my uncle's casket.  I'm not going to go into the emotions that my family experienced and are still experiencing--it's unexplainable and impossible to emphasize with because each loved one lost is a different experience to everyone.  What I do want to go into are the things that God has revealed to me through this tragedy.

Life is short.  No matter how long you live--life is still short.  I've spent so much time saying "I'll do this eventually when I can.  What I can afford to. When I loose weight;" the excuses are endless.  So I'm trimming the fat in my life.

I'm no longer going to surround myself with people mindlessly.  I know who my best friends are.  The ones who called me.  The ones who cried with me. The ones who know me inside out.  Those are the ones that I'll keep close.  I like all my friends, but my heart can only be open to a select few.

My family is everything to me.  I cherish every moment I spend with them and I'm happiest with them.  It's time to make them a top priority.

There is a reason I haven't found a church in Raleigh.  I already have a church.  That I love.  That I intend to become more involved with as things start falling into place soon.

God has revealed a new life to me.  A life that I ignored and decided against when I moved to Raleigh.  It's time to change.

This post is dedicated to my Uncle Mike

Guest Post: Fear

As you may recall, I challenged my friend AJ to write a devotion last week.  I also challenged myself to complete my character profiles--I did not do this.  But in my defense, I'm in crisis mode with my family and my mind is not fully devoted to anything besides prayer and family.  However, AJ completed the challenge.  And here is her wonderful devotional:

Today I want to talk about the F word.  Oh yeah, I’m going there.  It’s the ugliest four letter word you can think of.  Okay, ready?  Here it goes…
FEAR.
At some point, we’ve all been scared of something.  As children we are scared of monsters under the bed, the boogeyman in the closet, or in the case of one of my nieces…the tooth fairy.  J  But as we grow, fear begins to take on a more real form in our lives.
Have you ever let the fear of failing keep you from going after something you wanted?  Maybe it’s a new job, or trying to reach your goal weight (boy have I failed at this one a time or two…or ten), or maybe you’ve been holding off on dating someone new because you are fearful of what a new relationship could bring.
We often let it {fear} paralyze us from pursing our goals because we have a fear of failing.  I look back on my life so far and already I see many times where I have let the fear of failing stop me.  I didn’t try out for the dance team for the first 3 years of high school because I was scared.  Scared of what? I was hesitant to even tell people that I was thinking of starting a side business because I was scared of it failing.  If we let fear stop us from everything, nothing in our lives will ever get accomplished!
But not after today.  No more.  Yeah, I know…easier said than done, right?
But friends, today I have great news.  There’s someone who wants to take all our fears and worry away!  He wants us to completely and utterly TRUST in Him.  To not even worry about that new job, that diet, or that new relationship.  Know why?  Because He already knows how it turns out.  J  He has a plan for you, for me, and He doesn’t want our FEAR of failure to stop us from pursuing His will for us.  Oh yeah, by now you know who I’m talking about…God.
No more will fear stop us.  After today I want you to take the F word, FEAR, out of your vocabulary.  Two verses I leave with you today:
Jeremiah 29:11-  For I know the plans I have you, says the Lord.  Plans for good and not for evil,           to give you a future and a hope. (NLT)
Mark 11:24- I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours. (NLT)
I don’t know what fear you’re battling with today friend, but I know that if you truly give it up to God and trust in Him and His will, you will be blessed.  I encourage you to replace the word fear with another F word.  You’ve probably heard it a time or two…
FAITHJ
Blessings,
Amanda

the words "I Love You"

Last night as I stood with some of my family in the ICU waiting room and listened to our voices reaching out to God for healing I was filled with happiness and love.  Despite everything around me--not one dark thought was able to enter my mind.

Afterward while we talked about how my uncle has a family filled with fierce love for one another, my uncle Glenn said something that has stuck with me:
(for reference purposes, my uncle Glenn is married into the family.  As is my uncle Mike.)

"This family loves one another.  It's shocking.  When I first met this family I was shocked by the amount of people who said 'I love you' to another and how many hugs were exchanged.  It took time for me to get used to it.  My family didn't do that.  This family says it every chance they get.  And that's special."

I tell people I love them as often as possible, including my close friends.  It's natural.  It's normal.  I need them to know.  I want them to know.  But as I've gotten older I have noticed that it throws people for a shock.  I dated someone once whose family hardly ever exchanging hugs, compliments, or much less "I love you."  They just didn't do it.

I don't know how many families and friends exchange these words on a daily basis.  Of course, just saying them isn't enough--you have to mean it.  I know that my family loves me without pause.  I have floods of memories with my family that are entrenched with love.  And when I speak to my family and see them, I am 100% happier than I was the moment before.

In that room last night, I felt God's spirit as well as the weight of a family's love in the room.  And it's because of that feeling, because of the knowledge that my family's love is true that I know these present circumstances will not stop us.  We will continue fighting.  My uncle Mike will continue fighting.  For his family.  For Kelley. For Katie. For Lauren. And for his wife, my aunt Sandra.  We don't know why things are what they are--but I pray that we can show the hospital and others that our love for one another is unwavering.  And that our love derives from our relationship with Christ.  And that it is because of Him that we will survive this.

VBS: The Big Apple Adventure

This post is a bit late but my good friend Marc sparked my memory and I realized I never posted any VBS pictures!!!  Gasp!

The theme this year was The Big Apple Adventure....honestly not my favorite but still cute.  As always Kerri and my mom did a fantastic job with getting everything ready and running smoothly.  I taught 5th and 6th grade and went with a Backstage at Broadway theme for Amanda and mine's room.

Coming Up

MIA for almost a week!  We had Vacation Bible School at church this week so my free time has been filled by putting on band aids, telling kids about God, and marching around New York City:)  I'm headed to the beach for the weekend in just a few minutes and will be finishing up this long weekend with a tacky modeling show.  All of which will make it's way into my blog.  Things to look for:

VBS

Beach Adventures
Tacky Outfits
And of course...cupcakes

See you after the fourth!!! Have a great holiday!

The Duck Was Rescued.

Today I began a new job.  And saved a baby duck.  And I have almost completely cut ties with the other lease holder.

Today was a great day.

But the coolest part of today was definitely the baby duck.  While walking during lunch with a coworker we watched as a baby duck rushed across the busy street and was almost slammed with a car--but thankfully the car hit the brakes and barely missed it (possibly from my co-worker and I's frantic arm waving).  Once the car moved around the little duck, he then sat down right in the middle of the street. I then rushed across the street and scooped up the little ducky and returned him to the lake.

I've often wanted to be scooped up during my perils in life and returned to safety.  I thought about this today when I realized that I have been scooped up and saved in the nick of time.  At the hands of "friends," death, debt, and depression I have gotten to the point where I just sat down in the middle of it with the thought of "meh. no point."  And it's then that God sends angels in the form of friends, life, new opportunities, and true happiness.  So today, as I sat and listened to all the new job training and felt slightly overwhelmed, I thought about how these past several months have been on the up and up and the changes I'm facing-- I smiled.

unrealistic love

Not only do I find this hilarious I also find it to be symbolic of people's expectations in love.  We tend to spend so much time dreaming up the perfect person to fall in love with that we often pass on great people just because one piece is slightly off.  We have no idea who the perfect person is, God knows.  Not us.  In our mind we have built up the perfect person who even if they did come along they may be totally wrong for us.  Like a tape dispenser.  Look at the person who is genuinely interested in you and give them a chance.

Lent...Day One

This is my first time participating in Lent and I’m very excited.  Growing up Baptist we typically did not recognize Lent, however, my current church, which has Presbyterian ties, not only acknowledges Lent but also has pledged to spend the time building a strong sense of community development.  So here is my unofficial official Lent commitment:
  • Grow in community with my church as well as friends and family
  • Limit TV intake drastically.  I mindlessly watch TV after work until bed way too often.  The only time the TV will be watched is in the morning for the news, Basketball games, and if invited to watch TV in company by anyone other than my roommate or immediate family.
  • No cheese.  None at all.
  • No meat on Fridays.
I’ve never been a big fan of Lent being practiced for personal gain so each of these promises have been made after much prayer and consideration of how each of them improves my walk with God.  TV does nothing but take time away from me that I should be spending in prayer and meditation.  You might ask though why cheese? Why meat?  I’m currently taking very mindful and watchful steps to improve my health and body (i.e. my new Asian diet and kickboxing) and cheese really is not the best thing for you (especially the amount I eat).  My motivation to improve my body is not for superficial gain; I love the way I look, curves and all, and I’ll be the first to tell you.  Of course it has taken years to come to the point of loving the way I look and I’d be lying if I said I reached the conclusion on my own.  The conclusion honestly arose from a memorable comment by my best friend.  He tends to be a bit picky when it comes to looks and for some reason his comment turned into my own personal breakthrough.  Anyways, my motivation is that my body is not what it could be and as my soul’s dwelling place—I need to keep it up to par.  The meat stems from the traditional practice of Lent and I’m choosing to follow it out of respect.

So today, I embark on my first Lent...TV and cheese, I already miss you.

And before I head out to the Ash Wednesday service here is a bit of Lent history:

Purpose of Lent—to prepare through prayer, repentance, almsgiving, and self-denial for the commemoration of the death and resurrection of Jesus
40 Days—derives from the 40 days of temptation that Jesus spent in the desert-although Lent is actually 46 days, some people exclude Sundays as a day to break fasting.  It begins on Ash Wednesday and concludes on the Saturday before Easter.
Notable Days—this varies quite a bit so I’m only going to mention personal notable days: Ash Wednesday, the day of repentance; Palm Sunday (Sunday before Easter), Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem; Good Friday, the day of the crucifixion; and Easter, the day of resurrection.   (Of course these dates are commemorative…just like Christmas)

Happy Ash Wednesday!

The arms of God

I sit in my car in the dark parking lot after dropping off some of the best girls in the world when suddenly AF and EP come rushing back down the alleyway, beaming with excitement.  Pulling open my car door with exhilaration they fill my seat with books.  Nothing special.  Just books they have read that they wish me to read.

All in all, this is not a significant event of any sort.  I am often getting in and out of my car in that parking lot, walking down that same dark alleyway, spending evenings sharing stories, laughter, and exotic foods with these girls, etc.  But after saying final goodbyes and making my way back home, I look over at the books in my passenger seat and smile.

Friendship.  I've come across a lot of quotes, definitions, and stories of friendship but as I drove home that night I felt the arms of friendship.  I expected nothing out of these two girls and gained everything.  When I first met them I never expected anything out of it, and yet they pushed their way into my life bringing an ever constant flow of smiles and strong support.  The first time I noticed this was like being hit by a brick out of nowhere.  I was in the midst of heartbreaking situation and found myself on AC2, EP, and AF's couch surrounded by all three of them only to learn that they had been discussing the current trouble in my life and took it upon themselves to offer me everything.  They offered advice, a lending ear, shoulder to cry on, food, fun activities...they offered me a sincere friendship without ever asking for anything in return.

Friendship, caring for someone, is a continual sub-conscience decision to do whatever it take to make them happy.  It is loving someone.  It is an act of God.  God is love.  In friendships such as these, you can see God.  I was asked recently to share an experience in my life where I have seen community, seen friendship, that was a show of God's Love.  This was my answer:

It was a day before her birthday.  A newlywed, with a full-time job, spending her evenings teaching a class full of VBS kids, it was a moment in her life that should have been spent anywhere than where she spent it.  She should have been at work.  She should have been preparing for VBS.  She should have been spending time with her new husband.  She should have been relishing in birthday joy.

So where was she? Beside a deathbed.

It was the final hours of my grandmother's life and I was rushing home, trying to drive while wiping tears away from eyes.  The trees lining the highway were a complete blur, the other cars seemed to be out of place; the only real thing was AJ's voice on my phone.  When I finally arrived at my grandma's house, AJ arrived mere minutes behind me.  She spent the day with a family that was not her own, tending to their needs, sacrificing her own needs.  While we watched, waited and cried into the wee hours of the morning, she was there as long as time would allow.  That is what God's Love looks like.  It was not her hands that brought us water, it was not her arms that wrapped around us, it was not her voice whispering in our ears--it was God's.

So when I looked over at those books in my passenger seat after what seemed like an insignificant event; I realized that a true friendship is a friendship that reflects His Love.  It is His way of wrapping his arms around us here on earth.

Dedication note:  First of all I will NOT be making a habit out of dedicating blogs to people. It's silly.  But in spite of that, this is dedicated to AF and AJ.
